What we do

Studio Wood is a multidisciplinary, gender equal design team based in Bournemouth on the South Coast. We collaborate with like-minded clients to create meaningful products aligned with our core values and design principles.

We exist to create intelligent and meaningful products that make a positive impact on our industry and planet.

Why work with us

01-03

We design products that are responsible.

Sustainability is not an afterthought, it’s woven into everything we do. Every stage of a product’s lifecycle is taken into consideration. If there’s a better way of doing things, we want to know about it and we will share that insight with our clients.

02-03

We design products that are timeless.

In a world populated by trends and fads, Studio Wood’s designs stand out from the crowd for the right reasons. Our consistency to an unbiased, gender-neutral aesthetic puts a product’s accessibility and purpose at the heart of everything we do. No egos and no overcomplications, just intelligent ideas and meaningful features designed to last.

The Studio Wood aesthetic is minimal, unbiased and gender neutral. And for good reason. Our aim is to speed up the adoption of sustainable practices through innovation and design. The consistency to our aesthetic brings more people on this journey with us.

03-03

We design products that are useful.

We believe products should exist for a reason. Our ideas might be unlimited, but our earth’s resources aren’t. We approach every project with a curiosity and commitment to inclusivity, accessibility and positive change. Our intelligent, unbiased solutions serve a purpose in the real world for now and in the future.

Our Process

Frame the design strategy.

Discovery is the precursor to effective design, which is why this first stage is so integral to the process. If a clear brief isn’t identified, then we evaluate the market and unlock areas ripe for innovation, working closely with the client to identify the potential of a product. Smart research methods are used to understand, assess and observe user behaviours, which help to identify valuable insights to strategically shape the correct brief.

  • Through ethnographic research, we deeply understand users, their needs, and desires. Observations, interviews, and interactions inform our design decisions, creating products that resonate with real people and make a meaningful impact.

  • We use focus groups to collect diverse perspectives and feedback from a select group of individuals, delving into specific topics to identify patterns and understand user preferences. These insights guide our design process, ensuring our products meet our target audience's needs and expectations.

  • Market research is integral to our approach. We analyse industry trends, competitor offerings, and consumer behaviour to identify opportunities and validate our design decisions. This data-driven approach ensures our products are well-positioned and aligned with market demands.

  • Trend research is a key aspect of our process. We stay ahead of the curve by exploring emerging trends in design, technology, and consumer behaviour. This knowledge informs our creative direction, enabling us to create innovative and relevant products that resonate with today's and tomorrow's consumers.

Explore conceptual designs.

The design stage is rich in conceptual thinking, and allows our team to flex their creativity, intuition and pragmatism. Here we take the observations of the discovery stage and explore as many relevant options as possible, identifying innovative and intelligent solutions that fit the brief. Through this explorative process, we can unearth the emotional and practical benefits of each design, giving us a rich landscape of possibilities for moving forward.

  • During Concept Generation, we explore diverse ideas and potential solutions based on insights from the discovery stage. Our team's creativity and expertise drive the development of innovative concepts aligned with project goals.

  • Design Language defines visual elements reflecting a brands/products personality. We create cohesive and compelling identities using colour palettes, imagery, and design elements for a memorable user experience.

  • CMF explores the perfect blend of colours, materials, and finishes for products, ensuring aesthetics and functionality align with the brand's identity, user preferences, and manufacturing processes.

  • Material research involves an in-depth exploration of various materials to identify those that best suit the product's requirements in terms of performance, aesthetics, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Iterate solutions.

Having identified a design solution, we undergo a detailed development process, during which we create multiple iterations and prototypes that stay true to the initial design intent. By taking the idea through to manufacturable data, we’re able to develop a refined and purposeful final design that balances function, innovation and aesthetic.

  • Here we create precise computer-aided design (CAD) models. These models contain all the necessary information for manufacturing, including dimensions, materials, and assembly details. The CAD models serve as a basis for producing prototypes and preparing for the production process.

  • During visualisation, we bring designs to life through realistic renderings, animations, and virtual prototypes. This process allows clients to visualise and experience the product before it's physically produced.

  • While developing products, we create physical prototypes to validate and refine the design. This iterative process helps us assess functionality, aesthetics, and manufacturability, ensuring the final product meets our clients' expectations.

  • Here we continuously refine and enhance the product through multiple iterations. We gather feedback, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments to achieve the best possible outcome. This iterative approach ensures a robust and successful final product.

  • During User Testing, we engage real users to evaluate the product's usability, functionality, and overall user experience. Their valuable feedback guides refinements and optimizations, resulting in a user-centric design that meets their needs effectively.

Bring design to fruition.

When delivering a product to market, we work with tried and tested suppliers and production facilities to get the final product made and delivered to exceptional standards. Our extensive knowledge in this area ensures quality control at every stage, and we work closely with our clients to launch the final product seamlessly and efficiently.

  • During the Design for Manufacture stage, we optimise the product design for efficient and cost-effective mass production, collaborating closely with manufacturers to ensure quality and scalability.

  • We can support clients on how to build strong relationships with suppliers, coordinate logistics, and ensure timely delivery of materials and components. We work closely with them to maintain quality standards and resolve any issues that may arise during production.

  • We can provide expert advice and assistance throughout the production process. We work closely with manufacturers to ensure that the design is translated accurately, meeting quality standards and cost-effectiveness.

  • Engineering drawings are precise and detailed illustrations that communicate how a product is to be manufactured. They include dimensions, materials, tolerances, and other specifications essential for production and assembly.

Work we are proud of

Chilly’s Sport Flip Bottle

Our longstanding partnership with Chilly’s was established in 2017. The Chilly’s team briefed us to design a reusable sports bottle to complement their current range.

Creating a sports lid involves finding the right balance between practicality, safety, and looks. Our task was to come up with a design that works seamlessly with Chilly’s Series 2 bottle. We aimed to make it easy to drink vertically with one hand, prevent spills, and easy to clean.
